mandatary (man-d[schwa]-ter-ee), n.

1. A person to whom a mandate is given. See MANDATE(5).

2. An agent, esp. one who acts gratuitously but is entitled to be indemnified for expenses incurred in carrying out the mandate. ¡ª Also termed (in Roman law) mandatarius.
