1. A delay in a voyage, or in the delivery of cargo, caused by the charterer or consignee, who becomes liable for demurrage.

2. The time for which the party who has chartered a vessel, or is bound to receive the cargo, must pay demurrage because of a delay in performing the contract. ¡ª Also termed sobrestad¨ªa (soh-bray-stah-dee-ah).
