annum luctus (an-[schwa]m l[schwa]k-t[schwa]s), n. [Latin ¡°year of mourning¡±] Roman law. The year following the death of a married man during which his widow could not remarry, because of the confusion that would ensue in determining the parentage of a child born a few months after a second marriage within that year. ¡ª Also sometimes termed year in mourning.
